Glenn Gould and Arnold Schönberg

In one of his letters in 1962, Glenn Gould made a question;

"Would you speculate as to what, in your opinion, will be the reputation of Schönberg in the year 2,000? Will he be primarily thought of as a theorist or as a composer and, if the latter, will his work have found a solid place in the repertoire?"

What kind of answer do you make?

Gould mentioned about this work in 1972;

"Opus 19 is certainly one of the linch-pins of history - works more important results they engendered (op.19, I think, is a direct descendent of the Boulezian experiments with timbre, etc.) than for any intrinsic merit they possess."

Letters between Kandinsky and Schönberg

Letters from Schönberg to Kandinsky (1911.01.24 to 1923.05.04 - 23 letters)
From the first letter;
".. I thank cordially for your letter. I was very much glad. Until now I have not got popularity. On the contrary a few people are enthusiastic fans of mine. It is very important for me to have those precious fans.... "
"... We can surely find out an exact coincidence between us on the most important aspect. That is what you call 'the nonlogical' or what I call 'the exclusion of aware intention in art'. I agree with you about what you wrote on the compositional elements... "
Letters from Kandinsky to Schönberg (1911.01.18 to 1923.04.24 - 36 letters)
From the first letter;
"... The things and the way of thinking or feeling which both of us want to obtain have surprisingly many commonly sharing aspects. So, I dare to express my sympathy to you...."
"... You have realized in your works what I have been adoring about the freedom of styles in music. Each voicing part which moves independently following its own destiny and has its own life represents exactly what I want to find out in the picturesque formulation...."

Twelve Tone Music

Had Arnold Schönberg changed the way how music was thought of in the 20th century ?
His style is called the twelve tone music which avoids tonality ( perfect intervals, triadic forms, diminished 7ths ).

It is hard for ordinary people to understand the system. But anyway we can enjoy his music. Even if you don't know the method of painting, you will be happy with Botticelli, Picasso or Andy Warhol. As a matter of fact, many of us don't even know the method of fuge exactly.

J.S.Bach used all twelve notes for this theme of the fuge for the Well Tempered Clavier Vol.1 No. 24.

Who is Schönberg ?

Arnold Franz Walter Schönberg was born in Vienna, Austria, on Sept. 13, 1874, and died in Los Angeles on July 13, 1951.

He was not a born musician or composer. When he was 21 years old, his music career started. In 1908, Schönberg began to establish the 12 tone music and composed some remarkable pieces. Then the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin invited him as a professor.
As a Jewish descendant he had to move to another place from Europe. He found the place for live in the United States and worked at the University of California in Los Angeles.

His own works are seldom performed, but now many musicians are applying his 12 tone theory for their music creation.

Some of his major works are :
Transfigured Night; string sextet (1899)
Three Piano Pieces (1909)
Six Little Piano Pieces (1911)
Pierrot Lunaire; 21 recitations with chamber accompaniment (1912)
Suite for Piano (1924)

From Goldberg to Schönberg

glenn arnold
Glenn Gould was the top of addicts of the Goldberg Variations by J.S.Bach in the world.

Bach - Goldberg - Schönberg - Gould

Bach - Schönberg - Gould

"schön" means "beautiful".
"gold" is nothing more than gold.
"berg" means "mountain".
Gould admired the beautiful mountain.
For him 'Goldberg' means nothing.

Bach created the complete tonal music.
But his music became so complicated that it went beyond the realm of tonality. Schönberg should have been the successor of J. S. Bach.

Bach's music is an architecture.
Schönberg's music is an aerospace structure.
